As investigations into sex crimes in the country appear to be on the rise, the Prison and Probation Authority (PPA) has announced that a record number of pedophiles are sitting in Icelandic prisons. There are currently 26 persons incarcerated for sexual offences, of which 11 are pedophiles, RÚV reports.

Páll E. Winkel, director of the PPA, noted that there has been a staggering increase in the number of pedophiles behind bars in Iceland over the past decade, and the current number of prisoners behind bard for sexual abuse of children does not include the high number of accused pedophiles awaiting trial.

Páll believes the increase in pedophilia cases going through the system, as well as the increased number of prisoners being held for pedophilia is a result of people becoming more aware of the problem in society coupled with improved enforcement of, and heavier punishments for such crimes.
