The Euro 2020 qualification groups have been drawn, and Iceland will once against face their old rivals, World Cup holders France.
France ended Iceland’s legendary Euro 2016 run in the quarter finals, but the last time the two sides met in a hotly contested “unfriendly”—after France had won the World Cup—the prancing French narrowly scraped a 2-2 draw after throwing on star forward Mbappe to try and save their crumbling honour.
Iceland have a decent record with the other group contenders: Turkey, Albania, Moldova and Andorra. We beat Turkey emphatically last time they met in 2017, with a 3-0 scoreline; Albiania were dispatched 2-1 at the two teams’ last meeting in 2013.
Iceland have won all five of their meetings with Andorra. International pundits often bring up the size of Iceland, claiming the tiny population of 340,000 makes it a minor miracle that today’s Iceland side stands shoulder to shoulder with the international big boys. It’s interesting to note, then, that Andorra is even smaller, with 76,965 citizens.
Moldova are the only team in the group that the men’s senior team is yet to play, although Iceland have done well in previous U19 and U21 match-ups.
Anyway, that’s enough facts already. The basic news is that Iceland are still on track to win the Euro 2020 tournament, and France are in serious trouble. Let’s do this!
