Gabríel Ólafs, a 19-year old composer and pianist, has signed a record deal with British record label One Little Indian, which also represents Icelandic music royalty Björk and other Icelandic acts such as Ásgeir, Samaris and Fufanu. For those unfamiliar with the label, this is a big deal, especially for someone so young.
Gabríel has not released an album yet, but has already gained a lot of attention for the music that he’s uploaded to Soundcloud. His music is mainly inspired by film music composers such as Jóhann Jóhannsson and Ludovico Einaudi. It loosely fits into the category of minimalism, but still manages to surpass that limiting label. One Little Indian plans on releasing his first album worldwide soon, as Gabríel is expected to finish recording the debut shortly.
If you want to catch this rising star before he sets out on his journey towards international fame and success, you can still get tickets for his concert at Harpa on July 30th, where a group of young musicians will perform his music. Tickets are 2,900 ISK and can be bought here.
