A post by Guide to Iceland mocking presidential hopeful Donald Trump has drawn both support and criticism from American readers.
The post in question depicts yet another stellar photo of Trump, accompanied by the text, “Dear Americans, Trump #MakesAmericaLookStupid Your friends, Icelanders”. Guide to Iceland added the caveat, “Fortunately, we know better …”, but even this qualification was not enough to soothe some American readers.
Fortunately, we know better…

Hundreds of comments have followed the post, and it has been shared widely. While some Americans have expressed embarrassment over Trump succeeding as well as he did in yesterday’s Super Tuesday primary elections, not everybody was on board with the criticism.
The main point of contention is that making political posts on a Facebook page devoted primarily to tourism in Iceland is inappropriate. Some people, however, have taken things farther: one American commented by pointing out the 2008 bank crash and the widespread belief in elves in Iceland, asking “Who is stupid?” They further contend that Iceland is in no position to criticise America until Iceland learns to “get it together”.
Guide to Iceland, for their part, have been replying to the critical comments by pointing out that they have criticised local politicians as well, and encourage others to do the same.
We at the Grapevine, while also covering a lot of tourism-related issues, do not have an official position when it comes to American politics. However, based on continued discussions conducted at our office, there is a broad consensus that Donald Trump is a terrible human being who already embarrasses Americans, and would likely continue to be awful if he were president.
