I Love The Smell Of Fireworks In The Morning: New Year In Reykjavík

Published January 1, 2016

Reykjavík rang in the new year last night with a customary bang.

As well as displays in all of the various municipalities of the city’s metropolitan area, there were countless displays fired off from people’s back yards, making for a huge and famous firework spectacle over the city. People travelled from all over the world to witness the new year fireworks, mingling with locals and creating a buzzy, excitable spirit downtown.

We ran up to Hallgrímskirjka, through a fog of gunpowder smoke, just before midnight, and caught the following phone snaps. It was hard to tell if the lumps of powder falling from the air were composed of ash or snow, but the contents of our pockets, jean turn-ups and hair this morning revealed that it was the former.

Happy new year, everyone!
