If you are planning on traveling through eastern Iceland today, be warned—it could be very rough going, and road closures are a distinct possibility.
The latest weather alert cautions that heavy rains are expected in the southeast and east of Iceland, lasting through today into early tomorrow morning. As such, there is an increased risk of flash flooding, rising rivers, and landslides.
Give the steepness of the mountains in the east, and how close to the mountains Route 1 runs, this makes travel through this area especially treacherous today.
Winds will be from 10 meters per second to up to 18 metres per second as well, which can greatly reduce visibility, and is especially dangerous for small cars—wind sheers and gusts across roads are especially strong when close to the mountains.
This being the case, it is advised to avoid traveling through this area until tomorrow midday. As always, check both the weather forecast and road conditions.
