Composer Jóhann Jóhannsson would have turned 50 years old last Thursday. To celebrate, Join Motion Pictures have announced that work has begun on a feature-length documentary about him, with the working title ‘123 Forever: Jóhann Jóhannsson’. The film is written and directed by Icelandic artists Kira Kira, Orri Jónsson, and Davíð Hörgdal Stefánsson. At the same time, a tribute concert will be held at Hallgrímskirkja tomorrow at 20:00.

Jóhann had an extensive career in music, film-making, and various collaborations. He is currently working on a film called ‘Last and First Men,’ which is set to premiere in 2020.

Anton Máni Svansson, owner and producer at Join, alerted The Grapevine to the announcement. “It is our intention to profile his career in an ambitious and artistic manner, and to shed light on the methods and philosophy of this great artist,” he said.

Join is conducting an extensive archival search. The directors welcome any source material and/or footage at 123forever@jmp.is.

Through the course of his career, Jóhann enjoyed a break-neck ascendency, through compositions that breathed soul into movies and television. His death last year shook the music world and Icelandic society, and those who knew him best paid loving tribute to his impact and influence in the wake of the tragedy.
