From Iceland — Mayor To Premier New Play

Mayor To Premier New Play

Published August 18, 2011

Mayor of Reykjavík Jón Gnarr has written a play, and it will debut in March when the theatre season commences again.
The new line-up of plays at Borgarleikhús (The Reykjavík City Theatre) will be announced today, RÚV reports. Thirteen new Icelandic works are included in the programme, among them Hótel Volkswagen, a play by Jón Gnarr.
The play is directed by Benedikt Erlingsson – with whom Jón Gnarr worked when they were in the sketch comedy television show Föstbræður together – who said of the mayor, “He’s an incredibly sharp writer and has a very clear idea of what he’s doing. It’s very comfortable and challenging to work with him for this reason.”
Benedikt believes the play will be somewhat in the spirit of Föstbræður, saying, “There’s a very unique and creative group working on this piece, and there was quite an eruption when we all came together.”
