Minister of Finance Steingrímur J. Sigfússon told reporters that with elections in the UK over and elections in Holland coming up, now is the time to start up Icesave negotiations again.
RÚV reports that the Icelandic Icesave committee met with Lee Buchheit yesterday, the man who negotiated between Iceland, the UK and Holland on Icesave previously. Speaking to reporters, Minister of Foreign Affairs Össur Skarphéðinsson said that a new economic report on Holland shows that Iceland doesn’t bear sole responsibility for the Icesave debacle. He added that opposition parties in Iceland deserved praise for standing up for Iceland’s best interests.
Minister of Finance Steingrímur J. Sigfússon added that as soon as a new PM and Finance Minister for Britain has been decided, Iceland should begin Icesave negotiations.
Conservative chairman Bjarni Benediktsson said in addition that the Special Investigative Commission report vindicated Iceland in the Icesave matter, and that there is no legal foundation for the demands made by the UK and Holland.
