From Iceland — Unemployment Decreasing

Unemployment Decreasing

Published May 13, 2010

Unemployment in Iceland has decreased by 2.6% in the past month alone. Data from the Directorate of Labor shows that 14,670 people were on unemployment roles in April, taking the figure down to 9% from the previous month.
As before, the greatest unemployment is in the Suðurnes area (at 14.6%) and lowest in the West Fjörds (at 3.7%).
56% of those who were unemployed in April had been so for six months or longer, which is actually an increase by 384 people. 19% of the unemployed were between the ages of 16 and 24.
Job creation appears to be growing, little by little, with nearly 300 jobs available. The Directorate of Labor believes the unemployment situation is improving, and will decrease even further this month.
