From Iceland — Unemployment High Among Immigrants

Unemployment High Among Immigrants

Published January 23, 2009

1,270 immigrants are registered for unemployment benefits at the
Directorate of Labour, and it is believed that the percentage of
immigrants who are unemployed exceeds the national average of 5%. No precise figures are available because many immigrants who are out of work don’t register for unemployment benefits. Of the 11,000 to 13,000 immigrants currently on the labor market, those with a fair to excellent command of Icelandic are the most likely to keep or find work.
