The Directorate Of Health has decided that a predilection for BDSM, fetishism and other kinks will no longer be considered a disease,

In a brief statement made on the official site of the Directorate, it is announced that transvestitism, fetishism and sado-masochism are no longer considered diseases. This, the Directorate says, was done for Iceland’s healthy policy to be in harmony with those in other Nordic countries.

Magnús Hákonarson, the chairperson of BDSM á Íslandi, told RÚV he was very happy with the announcement.

“This is joyous news,” he said. “You can’t say anything else about it. I had no hope that this would happen before Christmas, but sometimes things happen.”

As reported, BDSM á Íslandi sent a letter to the Directorate last September pointing out that every other Nordic country has already declassified these tendencies as diseases.

Director of Health Birgir Jakobsson told reporters he appreciated the group bringing attention to the matter, and that he wanted to have a meeting with the group’s leadership to work out how best to address the issue. Birgir also said he saw nothing standing in the way of Iceland following the example set by other Nordic countries.
