From Iceland — Wage Gender Gap To Be Corrected

Wage Gender Gap To Be Corrected

Published June 20, 2012

Although the differences in salaries between men and women working at one government ministry appears slight, the ministry has nonetheless promised to correct the matter.
Eliminating the gender wage gap is one of the government’s top priorities. RÚV reports that in the course of examining their financial records, the Ministry of the Interior discovered such a gap. Experts who are male are paid 2.5% more than female experts, the ministry reports.
The ministry said that they consider this type of discrimination unacceptable, and have promised to correct it.
In general, the gender wage gap in Iceland is at 6.6%. By comparison, the average gender wage gap in the US is 17.8%.
The Icelandic survey, conducted last May by Pricewaterhouse Coopers, examined data regarding men and women working full time, and factored in such variables as education, age, work experience and work percentage.
