Spelunkers and amateur cave enthusiasts alike will be pleased to know that a new cave has been opened to the general public in Snæfellsnes.
It is, in fact, the first cave in Iceland that has been made accessible for the casual tourist. Located in Vatnshellir, the cave was formally opened earlier this week as part of so-called conservationist plan established for the Snæfellsnesjökull national park.
The cave – or series of caves, actually – were previously hard to access, and only experienced explorers were capable of even beginning to navigate them. But thanks to volunteers from the Lion’s Club, it is now much easier to access and explore.
Tours of the caves can be done on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays, and you do need to book a time in advance, which you can do by calling (+354) 436 6888, or by sending an e-mail to snaefellsjokull@ust.is. Some photos of these and surrounding caves can be seen here.
