Three women and two girls were murdered in Iceland in 2024 — the highest rate of femicide in 25 years. This is reported by the National Police Commissioner’s data science team, whose recently published data set displays the number of femicides between 1999-2023. 21 women and 33 men were murdered in the period.
The data was compiled for UN Women’s 16-day campaign against gender-based violence, which started on November 25.
According to the data, in 90% of the cases the victims knew their killer. In 40% of cases, the perpetrators were partners or former partners; 35% of the cases were committed by acquaintances or friends; and 15% had familial associations.
The police’s data does not constitute cases where the victim survived and left with physical or mental harm.
