Michele Ballarin has announced she intends to begin rebuilding WOW Air on freight rather than passenger flights. She visited Iceland over the weekend to promote the airline, but did not specify whom she met with while staying here.

The airline had planned to be up and running by mid-October, but that obviously didn’t happen. According to Gunnar Steinn Pálsson, WOW Air’s new Public Relations manager, the preparations for the new airline have been more time-consuming than anticipated for a number of undisclosed reasons. However, they plan to start flying in a matter of weeks, RÚV reports. The new airline will still fly between Keflavík and Washington, but they will now transport fish instead of people.

The goal is to expand their fleet and eventually begin flying to Europe. They will begin with two aircraft, which will increase with demand. According to Gunnar Steinn, the plan is to start small and focus initially on freight instead of passengers, since Michele has extensive experience transporting freight.

It is unclear when the company will begin passenger flights. If and when they do, please ignore the fishy smell, and remember that your in-flight meal was prepared by a Michelin-starred chef.
