Lightning struck WOW Air’s TF-GAY airbus as it took to the skies today, and an alert Icelander captured the moment on video.

As can be seen, a bolt of lightning struck the plane early in its flight. A plane being struck by lightning may be uncommon enough as it is, but in Iceland, the occasion is even more uncommon – lightning is a very rare sight in this country, as the weather seldom creates the conditions that make it happen.

Amazingly, the plane was undamaged, and continued on its merry way from Keflavík to Paris without incident.

The TF-GAY was only introduced to WOW Air’s fleet last February. As WOW Air founder and CEO Skúli Mogensen explained in his reasoning behind the decision, “WOW air is an airline for the people and one of our most important tasks is to lower fares in order to enable everybody to travel the world and get to know different cultures. We wholeheartedly support queer people’s fight for rights. Just as we support equal rights for everybody, no matter their gender, religion, ethnicity or culture. By making it possible for everybody to travel with us, we’ll hopefully manage to make the world slightly smaller, and better.”
