Iceland loves Christian holidays, and Monday will be no exception.
Today marks Whitsunday, the 7th Sunday after Easter. According to Biblical teachings, on this day the Holy Spirit descended upon the Earth, possessing Christ’s disciples, and compelling them to speak in tongues.
As such, the Monday after is also a holiday in Iceland. Many businesses will be closed, and bus service will be limited. Non-essential government offices will also be closed on this day.
Rest assured, however, that many tourism-related services will remain open, as will a great many restaurants, shops and cafés.
On Tuesday, life will return to normal. The next Christian holiday will be the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, which will be held on June 24.
