Iceland Airwaves today released the schedule for the 2015 festival, prompting a ripple of anticipation amongst ticket-holders.
To the uninitiated, a music festival releasing its schedule might not seem like such a big deal. But for Airwaves veterans: it just is. People eagerly scan the timetable to see what venues will be used (this changes year-on-year, gradually evolving the personality of the festival along with it), as well as whether their favourite must-see headliners will clash.
Another consideration is queueing — say, if you’re dead set on seeing SOPHIE at NASA on Saturday night, you’d better get in there early… meaning you’ll probably also be watching Vök, QT, East India Youth and Noa, instead of maybe some other band you wanted to see, like Beach House and Battles at Harpa.
Wait what? Beach House and Battles vs East India Youth, QT and SOPHIE?
See, we told you! This schedule is serious business!
Also – yeah, you read right. NASA is back! Possibly Reykjavík’s single best-loved music venue has risen from the ashes of NEAR CERTAIN DESTRUCTION at the hands of property developers. It’s great news— for many, this vintage music hall with its warm sound and distinctive doric arch is synonymous with the Airwaves party feeling.
Actually, NASA’s return—combined with the various airy spaces of Harpa, and downtown festival staples like the Iðnó concert hall, the cavernous Reykjavík Art Museum and the converted cinema Gamla Bíó—means that maybe queues won’t be such a big deal after all this year.
So! With that in mind, here’s the schedule. Let the planny-plan-planning begin! Airwaves is coming! YES!
