According to data from the European Broadcasting Union, nearly every television viewer in Iceland watched this year’s Eurovision, topping every country in the world.
Hollywood Reporter revealed that the international song contest drew 197 million viewers across 40 countries, with the final comprising 39.6% of the total market share.
But the data also confirmed what anyone living in Iceland has long suspected: no one tops Iceland when it comes to sheer numbers of viewers. Of those Icelanders who watch television, 95.5% watched the finals, despite Iceland’s own entry – María Ólafsdóttir – not making that far. Only Sweden – this year’s Eurovision winner – came close, with 86.5% of television viewers tuning in.
Overall, Eurovision is apparently a young person’s show, as 44.8% of 15- to 24-year-olds watching television in the 40 countries saw the final, exceeding every other demographic.
