The Icelandic Food and Veterinary Authority (IFVA) has published a reminder that it is illegal to drown mice in Iceland, reports RÚV.

Increased reports of mouse infestations this fall has lead to the illegal use of mouse traps – some homemade – that drown mice upon capture.

Additionally, glue traps and traps that suffocate mice are also prohibited, really anything that causes the mice unnecessary suffering.

Instead the IFVA recommend capturing mice in traps that do not actually harm them, so called “mouse motels”, then to kill them with a swift and hard knock to the head. Alternatively they recommend releasing them back into nature.
