Kolaportið will continue on as an Icelandic institution after signing a new 10 year lease with Reykjavík city yesterday, reports Vísir

Kolaportið market, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year receives roughly 20.000 people each weekend and has 80 booths.

“It’s a big day for me,” said Jón Gnarr who signed the lease alongside the city council, marking it as his last act as mayor. ”And I feel like I’m closing a circle because I started my campaign here at Kolaportið.”

“I am just really happy,” said Guðjóna Ásgrímsdóttir who owns a cafeteria in Kolaportið. “This is wonderful and we get to work in peace for the next ten years, without any worry and that’s just great. Now we can start improving and build an even better Kolaport.”
