From Iceland — Game of Thrones Tours To Iceland

Game of Thrones Tours To Iceland

Published July 10, 2013

Game of Thrones winter trips to Iceland is the newest addition to the Icelandic tourist industry, mbl.is reports.

Travel agencies The Traveling Viking and Iceland Travel are offering 4-5 day trips to Iceland next winter, to filming locations of the massively popular TV series which have for the biggest part been filmed in Iceland.

Jón Þór Benediktsson, owner of The Traveling Viking, told mbl.is that his staff had already last year noticed an interest in the filming locations of Game of Thrones, when they were taking tourists to see the Northern Lights in Mývatnssveit at the same time as the HBO film crew was filming in the area.

Sightseeing tour around the Game of Thrones locations in the North, the area “beyond the wall”, will be combined with visits to the traditional tourist spots such as Dimmuborgir and the nature baths by Mývatn. The tours are intended to increase the marketing of Iceland as a destination in winter time as well as a summer destination.

Jón Þór told mbl.is that the idea was not spurred by his personal admiration of the popular TV series. “I hadn’t even watched the show when I signed this deal.” But since then, he has both watched the show and read the books and become a true Game of Thrones fan. “Just like everybody else who have watched it, I’ve become addicted.”
