Reykjavík Mayor Jón Gnarr criticised on his Facebook page a newly passed law in Russia which makes gay propaganda illegal.
“If you don’t like gay people, then you must hate straight people – because they make them,” Jón wrote. “Dear Duma. Your religion is more dangerous than homosexuality. Gays are fun. You and your church are just scary.”
Duma, the lower house of the Russian parliament, passed a law banning gay “propaganda,” according to a news story that appeared on the BBC website yesterday. It is now illegal in Russia to claim that homosexuality or other non-traditional sexualities are normal, or provide information about homosexuality to children and under 18 years-olds.
It has also been made illegal to offend people’s religious beliefs. This may have something to do with the 2012 Pussy Riot anti-Kremlin protests, according to an article that appeared in the Guardian yesterday.
