Japanese Company Stops Buying Fin Whale From Iceland

Published May 30, 2013

The Japanese company Michinoku Farms has announced that it will stop purchasing fin whale from Iceland to use in its pet food products, RÚV reports.
Although the president of the company said that their production of fin whale jerky was in full compliance with Japanese law, he admitted that he was not fully aware of the public outrage it would cause.
On Tuesday, four environmental and animal welfare groups issued a joint press release expressing dismay over Michinoku Farms’ use of the endangered fin whale in the production of a dog food snack. Michinoku Farms has been purchasing fin whale from the Icelandic whaling company Hvalur hf.
The animal welfare groups have expressed their approval of Michinoku Farms’ latest decision.
