From Iceland — Government Seeking Way To Lower Price Of Condoms

Government Seeking Way To Lower Price Of Condoms

Published June 1, 2011

The Ministry of Welfare is trying to find a way to significantly reduce the price of condoms in Iceland, in the hopes of curbing the spread of venereal disease.
As many living in Iceland are abundantly aware, condoms are quite expensive. This is due in part to the fact that condoms are in the highest tax bracket, and have been so for quite some time. At the same time, the spread of sexually transmitted disease – chlamydia in particular – is on the rise.
Eyjan posed the question to Minister of Welfare Guðbjartur Hannesson about the price of condoms, and he replied that his ministry was currently seeking ways to reduce the cost. This could be done conceivably by bringing them down a few tax brackets, for example.
As it is, free condoms can be found at Hitt Húsið, and at Húð og kyn.
