While Brazilian singer Jussanam da Silva’s request for citizenship is still tied up in the system, Icelandic MPs are pushing to grant Icelandic citizenship to Marie Amelie, a Russian author who was deported from Norway last week, Eyjan.is reports.
“This is a rather strange case because this woman has no ties to Iceland,” Jussanam told vísir.is. “She is not in Iceland and she does not want to be in Iceland.”
Marie Amelie, as she calls herself, has lived in Norway since 2002. She was deported last week because she and her family were illegal immigrants, according to vísir.
Despite working in Iceland for two years, Jussanam has been denied both a work permit and a residence permit after she divorced her Icelandic husband.
“There is a position at Hlíðasaskóli school waiting for me and a fair number of Icelanders support me,” Jussanam told vísir. She finds it strange that the MPs want to fight for this Russian author, but not for her.
