From Iceland — Come Get Your Ash Here!

Come Get Your Ash Here!

Published May 5, 2010

One enterprising company has taken what many have seen to be a detriment to Iceland’s economy and turned it into a product for export – namely, ash from the Eyjafjallajökull volcano.
Nammi.is is now selling jars of the volcanic ash for sale online. Sold in 160g portions, the site touts the product as a historical product, saying in part, “In early April 2010 dust and ash emmissions from the Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajökull [ay-ah-fjad-la-jo-kul] managed to cause Worldwide havoc to the avaiation industry and affected over 100,000 flights coming in and out of Europe. It has been estimated that the dust cloud affected the lifes and plans of over 40 million Americans, for example. … This air travel disruption is the most extensive one in history and now you can own a piece of history – a sample of this very volcanic ash.”
If owning a piece of history isn’t enough, the revenue goes to a good cause: All profits from the sale of the ash will be donated to ICESAR (www.icesar.com), an organization who have been helping maintain safety in the volcanic area, and more recently, helping farmers dig themselves out from under the ash.
Act now, supplies are … alright, not exactly limited. But you’ll be helping do some good in Iceland!
