From Iceland — Wants to Move EU Membership Talks Forward

Wants to Move EU Membership Talks Forward

Published September 14, 2009

Jean-Claude Juncker, the Prime Minister of Luxembourg, told reporters
that after talking with Swedish PM Fredrik Reinfeldt, he believes
European Union membership talks with Iceland should be expedited.
According the Morgunblaðið, Juncker said he was enthusiastic about the idea of Iceland joining the EU. However, both the Swedes – acting as EU leadership – and expansion director Olli Rehn said that they do not believe Iceland should receive special treatment when it comes to when membership talks take place.
Support for joining the EU is strong within the Icelandic parliament, although concerns still remain with regards to sovereignty over national resources, as well as keeping unemployment to a minimum.
