Some of Iceland’s most influential artists will soon move under the same roof in West Reykjavík.
Fréttatíminn reports that the Living Art Museum, Kling & Bang and Ólafur Elíasson will soon be moving into the so-called “Marshall House” in the West Reykjavík neighbourhood of Grandi (seen in the background of the above image).
The house derives its name from the Marshall Plan, of which Iceland was a recipient. For many years, the building was a fish meal plant, but will now take on a new life, thanks in part to architects Ásmundur Hrafn Sturluson and Steinþór Kári Kárason of the firm Kurt og Pí.
The idea was inspired in part by the need for a revitalisation of art life in downtown Reykjavík. The Living Art Museum used to have a space on Skúlagata about two years ago, but has since moved to the far east neighbourhood of Breiðholt. Kling & Bang, which used to be housed on Hverfisgata, lost its space last summer and has been searching for a new place ever since. Ólafur Elíasson has been based primarily on Berlin, but will soon have a workshop in the Marshall House.
No official date on the Marshall House opening has been announced.
