The latest figures show that nearly 45,000 people visited Iceland in October alone – about 6,000 more than visited for that month the year previous.
Iceland’s tourism industry has been steadily increasing, figures from the Icelandic Tourist Board show. With two months still to go, already some 582,000 tourists have visited the country. By October 2011, about 470,000 tourists had visited thus far that year.
Demographically speaking, Brits topped the list in terms of tourists to Iceland this month, at 21%. This was followed by Americans, (13.1%), Norwegians (11.1%), Denmark (7.5%), Germany (6%) and Sweden (5.9%). The greatest increases seem to also be coming from British and North American tourists, whose numbers have increased by 34% and 16.7% respectively.
It is uncertain what has accounted for the increase in tourists to Iceland overall, but the number of tourists who visited in October – a great many of whom likely arrived for Airwaves – is encouraging, considering Hurricane Sandy made coming to Iceland difficult for a great many Airwaves hopefuls.
