From Iceland — Icelander Using Medical Marijuana

Icelander Using Medical Marijuana

Published November 21, 2011

An Icelander living in Akureyri is using marijuana for medical reasons, although there are no medical suppliers of the substance.
Grímur Freyr Hoffman Björnsson was perscribed marijuana by a doctor in the US to treat his nerve disease – specifically, 0.3 grammes, three times a day. Now living in Iceland again, he has no choice but to buy the substance illegally.
While he personally does not recommend using marijuana to relieve anxiety, pointing out that it can in fact raise anxiety, he says that for him it is a necessary part of his daily life. “I cannot function in a normal society without marijuana,” he says.
He agreed to be interviewed, and his full identity revealed, by television station Skjár 1 in the hopes that bringing attention to his case would help encourage lawmakers to change legislation about marijuana, allowing it to be sold for medical reasons.
