A new Gallup poll reveals that public trust in the police has never been higher.
According to the results, about 81% of those responding said they trust the police a great deal; the highest the police have ever polled. The National Police was naturally pleased with the results, and released a statement saying in part:
“One of the goals of the police force, according to the law enforcement plan of 2077 – 2011 has been to provide the very best service and, in so doing, to work to build up and maintain the public trust. Gallup has been measuring that level of trust since 1993. The police have come out consistently as the second most trusted institution in the country, after the University of Iceland.”
We can only hope this level of trust will continue, even if policemen are issued tasers, as was proposed – to strong opposition – last fall.
