Within minutes of Icelandic president Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson vetoing the Icesave bill, a Facebook group calling for his resignation was formed.
At the time of this writing the group has garnered over 5,600 members, including that of at least one member of parliament, Social Democrat MP Jónína Rós Guðmundsdóttir. Also in the group is Leftist-Green Reykjavík city councilperson Sóley Tómasdóttir, and a number of well-known Icelanders.
A statement from the group, written on their page, accuses the president of “rendering the government null and void in international relations.”
Many strong reactions to the president’s veto have already arisen. Leftist-Green MP Björn Valur Gíslason told Vísir that the president’s veto could create yet another financial crisis for the country. Gylfi Arnbjörnsson, the president of the Confederation of Icelandic Labor Unions, took the same tone, saying that the move could hit Iceland’s working class particularly hard.
