From Iceland — Two Icelandic ISPs Block Access to Website

Two Icelandic ISPs Block Access to Website

Published June 11, 2009

Icelandic telecommunications companies Og Vodafone and Síminn have
blocked access to the Icelandic website Ringulreid, in response to
repeated complaints from children’s rights groups. This marks the first time in Icelandic history an Icelandic internet service provider has thoroughly blocked public access to a website.
Ringulreid is a registration-free imageboard, like 4chan, specifically geared towards Icelandic users. The board is moderated although allowed content is adult in nature. Recently, complaints have been brought to police that some users of the site have used it to engage in “e-bullying” among other charges.
This has led to combined efforts from the police, Save the Children, Home and School, SAFT, The Public Health Institute of Icelandic, Stígamót and others to encourage Icelandic ISPs to block public access to the sites. The site has since been blocked by both ISPs.
Reykjavík area police are said to be trying to contact the hosts of the site, which is based overseas although the content is Icelandic.
