Jón Gnarr’s decision not to seek re-election as mayor of Reykjavík does not seem to have had much effect in the political landscape in the city.
According to a new poll conducted by Fréttablaðið and Stöð 2 the successor of the Best Party, Bright Future, maintains similar support as the Best Party received in the municipal elections in 2010, Vísir.is reports.
Bright Future would now receive 36.1% of the votes.
The Independence Party has lost some support since the elections and would now get 27.6% of all votes.
Both the Social Democrat Alliance and the Left-Green Movement maintain their support of 19.1% and 7.5% support.
Around 4.5% support the Progressive Party in the city and 4.9% of voters mentioned other parties in the poll.
If these were to be the results in the elections next spring, the distribution of councillors would remain unchanged.
Bright Future would get six councillors, same number as the Best Party has hereto had, the Independence Party would get five, Social Democrats three and the Left-Green Movement one.
However, half of the people who were polled had not yet decided which party to vote in next year’s municipal elections.
That could be explained by the poll being conducted so soon after Jón Gnarr’s announcement, that he would not run for another term as mayor and that the Best Party would run under the banner of Bright Future.
