From Iceland — Jón Gnarr Will Not Seek Reelection

Jón Gnarr Will Not Seek Reelection

Published October 30, 2013

Reykjavík Mayor Jón Gnarr announced on the radio show Tvíhöfði that he will not run in the next municipal elections.
“I think my time has come. If I were to do it again, I would have to become a politician and I’m not one. I’m simply not a politician,” he said. “I’m a comedian.”
“My whole life I’ve been a comedian, an artist, and I get a lot out of making people happy,” he said, explaining his drive in life. As mayor he said tried to do this and despite different opinions on how that has gone, he believes that he did the job well, citing The Best Party’s lead in a recent opinion poll.
He described his experience in politics the last three and a half years like being in a reading group where people only discuss sentences and never the story. Although some people can do it and enjoy it, he said it was not for him.
Without him, Jón said there is no Best Party and its members will run under the banner of the Bright Future party. He will finish his term, which ends on June 15, and then he said he was going to go look for happiness, which he believes there is dearth of in politics.
