The Reykjavik Family Park and Zoo’s seal aquarium is set to be upgraded in order to comply with animal protection standards, RÚV reports.
The recent Reykjavík City Council Convention stipulates that the aquarium should be extended and deepened, with a new animal enclosure to be constructed.
In an interview with RÚV, park head Þorkell Heiðarsson said that the staff had received numerous complaints throughout the years concerning the welfare of the animals. The current aquarium is only 1.7 metres in depth — shallower than most public swimming pools. With the improvements, the depth is set to be increased to four metres.
The park has seen limited improvements since its opening in 1990. In 2022, developments were scheduled but postponed. According to Þorkell, the upcoming renovations will amount to 150 million ISK.
