As reported by RÚV, the government has appointed a task force to prepare financing for the Sundabraut highway project. The program has been in the works for years and is set to be the single largest undertaking in Iceland’s transportation network.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, current financial plans estimate that the project’s annual investment costs amount to 20 to 25 billion ISK.

In 2024, Minister of Transport and People’s Party MP Eyjólfur Ármannsson claimed that the highway would be financed by tolls. The road is scheduled to be finished in 2031.

Since 1984, the concept of Sundabraut (or Sundabrú) has been on the authorities’ drawing board. According to the Icelandic Road and Costal Administration, the current Sundabraut plan includes an 11 kilometre-long road from Sæbraut to Kjalarnes. It is set to shorten the current driving distance by eight kilometres.
