In case you haven’t looked outside yet today, Reykjavík got a bit of snow last night.
Actually the entire capital region and Mosfellsbær are being beaten pretty hard by a winter storm that has left towering banks of snow on the sidewalks and have coated the roads in black ice and thick ruts of snow.
The police are advising people to stay off the roads unless travel is absolutely necessary.
This storm has hit much of the country, not just the Reykjavík area, so if you absolutely must take to the roads today plan ahead by checking your local conditions on The Icelandic Road Administration’s website and have some warm winter gear on hand in case of emergencies.
These conditions are expected to continue into the afternoon.
UPDATE: The police are re-issuing their instructions for everybody to simply stay at home today. Many cars have been stranded throughout the capital area, making it impossible for rescue workers to navigate roads, when needed, and for snow removal machines to do their job.
Víðir Reynisson, head of Civil Protection Iceland, has specifically addressed all those with large jeeps and 4×4 vehicles not to think the warning doesn’t apply to them. “[Your vehicle] doesn’t change anything. You still cannot run over the other cars.”
