Yesterday, the Icelandic Met Office reported an orange alert for most of the country with heavy snowfall and strong winds. The bad weather has caused power outages in many regions, including the South communities of Hólar and Höfn. The repair works have been delayed because of lightning, a rather uncommon occurrence in Iceland.
This morning, around 06:41 a lightning strike was spotted in the harbor area of Reykjavík, illuminating Harpa, the capital’s magnificent concert hall.
Thunder and lightning are said to rarely be observed in Iceland, however, they are much more common than many might suspect. While they are a rare occurrence in the North of the country, they can sometimes be spotted in the southwest regions.
As heavy precipitation will continue in Iceland on Tuesday there might be more lightning strikes during the night.
See below the photos of the lightning strike published by Harpa.
