Bogi Nils Bogason, the director of Icelandair, predicts that the airline will see an increase of passengers to Iceland of anywhere for 25% to 30% in the first quarter of 2020, Kjarninn reports.
The contention is not without merit, either; last year, the airline saw 25% more passengers to Iceland than in 2018. In December alone, the airline saw an 11% increase in passengers to the country and an 8% increase in passengers from the country over December 2018.
Interestingly, passengers taking connecting flights through Iceland actually decreased by about 9% last month compared to December 2018. Even so, Icelandair has never flown as many connecting flight passengers as it did in 2019: 4.4 million passengers in all, showing a 6% increase from 2018.
Icelandair’s on-time record for arrivals and departures improved last year over 2018 as well, and the airline has been in a relatively stable financial position. As much-touted plans to launch a budget airline in Iceland have yet to materialise, this will likely remain the reality for some time to come.
