Short on both time and money, but want to get your child baptised before the New Year? One church has you covered.

Nútíminn reports that Breiðholtskirkja church will be open on December 26 and, from 14:00 onwards, a special service will kick off.

At this time, any parent will be welcome to drop in with their child or children, without an appointment, and have their child or children baptised, free of charge.

Pastor Þórhallur Heimisson told reporters he got the idea while living in Sweden, where a similar idea was also implemented. He says people often delay or avoid baptising their children because they believe it requires a lot of expense and preparation.

“I think people think that this is such a big deal, needs a lot of preparation and even a great deal of money that people don’t have,” he told Stöð 2. “I think it’s brilliant that people can arrive without notice and receive a good service.”
