There have been almost as many cases of gonorrhoea this year as there were in all of 2015.

Vísir reports that 30 cases of gonorrhoea have been registered so far this year, which shows a significant increase of instances of the STD. In 2015, 39 cases of gonorrhoea were reported for the entire year.

Of those cases reported so far, 26 of the afflicted were men, and the bacteria was especially common amongst men who have unprotected sex with other men. These infections were all contracted in Iceland.

Multi-resistant strains of gonorrhoea have not been detected in Iceland, but only eight of these 30 cases reveal any information about antibiotic sensitivity.

It should perhaps go without saying, but one of the best ways to protect one’s self from gonorrhoea and similar infections is to use a condom.
