From Iceland — Two Towns May Become One

Two Towns May Become One

Published June 8, 2009

The municipalities of Bolungarvík and Ísafjörður in the West Fjörds could be amalgamated into one municipality in the very near future.
Minister of Transportation Kristján L. Möller met with town councilpeople from both towns to discuss the idea. According to West Fjörds Radio, Ísafjörður mayor Halldórs Halldórsson expressed approval of the idea and said he’d like to see the concept go farther; to incorporate all of the West Fjörds into one municipality. Möller said he would like to see the two towns become one before the completion of a tunnel being built through a mountain which separates the two towns.
The town council of Suðavík was invited to attend the meetings, but rejected the invitation. While Halldórsson is optimistic of his intended goal of one municipality for the entire region, ultimately the matter would be decided by the region’s residents, most likely through ballot resolution.
