Support for the ruling coalition is now under 40% according to a new Gallup poll, reportsRÚV.
In the past week, since the foreign minister put forth his proposal to withdraw from EU accession negotiations, voters for the Independence Party have dropped from 24% to 19%. The Progressive Party which had 16% of voters last week has dropped to 13%.
This means that currently the Progressive and Independence Parties have 32% of voters and the Social Democratic Alliance and Bright Future combined have 35% of voters.
“It didn’t take me so much by surprise [that support] has decreased because we’ve been in the midst of a very negative discussion and we have to take that seriously and work on how to react to it. We have not managed to get our message [about the EU proposal] across clearly enough, that’s absolutely obvious,” said Bjarni Benediktsson, minister of finance.
