Iceland‘s Prime Minister was married yesterday to her partner Jónina Léosdóttir as the new marriage law came into effect.
Although registered partnership between same-sex couples has been legal in Iceland since 1996, the law of marriage was written to be between one man and one woman. A vote was unanimously passed on June 11 in Alþingi to reword to law of marriage as being between two individuals. The law officially came into effect on June 27.
Jóhanna and Jónina have been in a registered partnership for several years. Yesterday their application to change from registered partnership to marriage was validated.
