The Icelandic Wikileaks domain name – wikileaks.is – is in little danger of being taken down as it would take a special court ruling in Iceland to make that happen.
ISNIC – the company which registers all websites with the .is domain name – posted a special article on their home page addressing concerns that the Icelandic Wikileaks URL could be taken down.
“When asked what it would take to close down wikileaks.is over its content, the answer is simple: a court ruling would need to be made against ISNIC to close the site. This has never happened,” the statement reads in part.
The statement says that ISNIC bears no responsibility for what is posted on wikileaks.is, nor the content of e-mails which use the wikileaks.is suffix, e.g., email@wikileaks.is.
“Only the police, at the behest of an Icelandic court, can order ISNIC to close down a site,” the statement continues. “Something which has never happened.”
For those concerned about a possible DDOS attack against wikileaks.is, a recent report published by McAfee, “Mapping the Mal Web” 2009, states that .is is amongst the most secure domains in the world. There is only a 0,3% chance of a malicious .is domain involving viruses or other forms online threats.
UPDATE: It should be pointed out, as alert Twitter readers have told the Grapevine, that “wikileaks.is” is just the DNS – if the content of Wikileaks changes or is removed, then those changes – or the site’s removal – will be seen when visiting wikileaks.is.
