A relatively new guest hostel in Reykjavík has won the Icelandic Travel Industry Association’s (SAF) innovation award, and the winner will likely surprise few Grapevine readers.
Of 18 possible nominees – almost all of them start-up companies – Kex Hostel came away with the award, Viðskiptablaðið reports.
In the reasoning given for the award, SAF cited Kex Hostel’s “forward-thinking” approach to the industry, demonstrating creativity and imagination in bringing about a new design for a hostel – usually considered the lowest standard accommodation under a roof. This type of innovation has given Kex Hostel a competitive edge, SAF says.
Kex Hostel does in fact feature a number of amenities not normally found at a hostel, including a café and bar, heated outdoor patio, laundry room, gym, guest kitchens, a meeting room, and free Wi-Fi.
