Reykjavík City Council may request parliament to review the law on the Christian Fund, as they believe it is “anachronistic”.
Last month, the city approved a plot of land for Muslim congregants to build a mosque on. More recently, the city also approved plots for the Russian Orthodox Church, Buddhists, and members of the pagan Ásatrú Society.
Vísir now reports that city council representatives from the Best Party, the Left-Greens and the Social Democrats supported an idea at a council meeting to ask parliament to review the law on the Christian Fund, which was last drafted in 1970. This law requires, amongst other things, that municipalities provide free plots of land for the building of Christian churches.
Members of city council who approved the idea said that it was anachronistic to give away valuable land to religious groups for no pay. If or when the request for legislative review will be submitted to parliament is still undetermined.
